Coptis japonica, the Japanese goldthread, is a species of flowering plant in the family Ranunculaceae, native to central and southern Japan, and introduced to Korea. In Asia it is grown for medicinal purposes, with the main alkaloid being berberine.
Coptis chinensis (scientific name: Coptis chinensis), a perennial herbaceous plant that prefers cold and moist places, belongs to the genus Coptis chinensis in the family Trichoaceae. Coptis chinensis is also a commonly used traditional Chinese medicine, which was first recorded in the "Shennong's Materia Medica", because its rhizome is bead-shaped and yellow, so it is called Coptis chinensis. Its taste is extremely bitter in the mouth, and there is a saying that "dumb people eat Coptis chinensis, and they can't say that they are bitter", which shows the taste.
Sources
Also known as Wang Lian and Zhi Lian. It is the dried rhizome of Coptis chinensis Franch, Coptis deltoidea C. Y. Cheng et Hsiao, and Coptis teeta Wall. They are known as "Weilian", "Yalian", and "Yunlian". Other alternative varieties include Coptis omeiensis (Chen) C. Y. Cheng and Coptis quinquesecta.
Growth habits
Coptis chinensis is generally distributed in the high mountainous areas of 1200~1800m, which requires a natural environment with low temperature and high air humidity. Fear of heat and drought. Cannot withstand strong sunlight and prefers weak light, so shade is required. The roots are shallow, distributed in the soil layer of 5~10cm, suitable for loose and fertile topsoil, rich humus, deep soil, pH 5.5~6.5, slightly acidic.
Traits
Most of the medicinal herbs are clustered and often curved, shaped like chicken feet, commonly known as "chicken feet lian", and its single rhizome is 3-6 cm long and 0.3-0.8 cm in diameter. The surface is rough, with irregular nodular protrusions, fibrous roots and fibrous root residues. The surface of the internode is as smooth as a stem, and it is commonly known as "crossing a bridge". The upper part of the body is mostly brown scales, and the tip often has a residual stem or petiole at the end. The surface is grayish-yellow or yellowish-brown. Hard, untidy in section, orange-red or dark brown in the skin, bright yellow or orange-yellow in the wood, radially arranged, sometimes hollow in the pith. The breath is slight and the taste is extremely bitter. It is mainly produced in Chongqing, Sichuan, Hubei, Guizhou, Shaanxi and other places in China. Among them, Coptis chinensis is a geographical indication product of China (produced in Shizhu Tujia Autonomous County, Chongqing).Yalian, the medicinal herbs are mostly single-branched, slightly cylindrical, shaped like "silkworm-like", slightly curved, 4-8 cm long, 0.5-1 cm in diameter, and "crossing the bridge" is longer, 1-3 cm. There are a few residues at the apex. It is a good product to be dry, stout, rootless, and shaped like a silkworm. It is mainly produced in Sichuan Province, China.
Yunlian, the medicinal herbs are curved in the shape of a hook, shaped like a "scorpion tail", mostly single branches, relatively small. It is about 2-5 cm long, 1.5-4 cm in diameter, and the internodes are dense. It is good to be dry, thin, with many knots, few fibrous roots, and yellow color.
