    Description of Stachyurus 'Magpie'

Lovely and unusual deciduous shrub, to 6' or so tall and wide, with purple-red stems and variegated leaves, long and pointed with large creamy margins and red tints in new growth. Blooms as other Stachyurus, with long dangling racemes of cream-to-yellow flowers in early spring. Charming over a bank. Sun to afternoon shade with plentiful summer water. Frost hardy in USDA zone 7. From china, these are listed as both S. praecox or S. chinesis: we lean toward chinensis.

Stachyurus Praecox ( Magpie Stachyrus )

Stachyurus praecox is not well known amongst gardeners, but is a fine winter-flowering shrub. Magpie is not as vigorous as the species and has an arching and rounded habit. Leaves are wide, medium green with cream margins. The flowers are small, pale yellow, appearing in early spring on 2-3 inch pendulous racemes. Fruits are small, yellow-red and berry-like. Prefers moist well drained acidic soil. Native to Japan.

    How to grow: Stachyurus 'Magpie'

Of all the plants that help lift our gloom during the short, dank days of winter, Stachyurus 'Magpie' is among the classiest. The graceful flowers and handsomely variegated foliage offer a taste of the bounty that will fill the garden later in the year. Stachyurus is a woodlander and enjoys conditions that seem nigh on impossible for many of us to recreate - rich soil and shelter from wind. Fortunately it is equally at home trained against a wall and it is in this setting that it makes an especially useful and beautiful contribution.

'Magpie' is more compact than the straight form, which originates from east Asia, but it will make a shrub of 1.5m by 2m (5ft by 6ft). Many nurseries still label it S. praecox, even though the botanists have removed the old specific epithet in reclassifying the plant. The praecox indicated that it flowers - from late winter - before producing leaves (look out for the word in other plant names when shopping for early colour). The tactile racemes of pale, yellowish-green, bell-shaped blooms look like elegant curtain trim. Each one dangles up to 10cm (4in) long, contrasting beautifully with the dusky-purple arching stems.
