Botanical Description

Cruckshanksia glacialis, Oreocaryon nivalis, Oreopolus citrinus, O. patagonicus, etc.). Cushion to mat-forming from a central woody taproot, in the wild to 1m or more across, the stems somewhat succulent. Leaves elliptic-ovate, l-3cm long, grey or less commonly deep green. Flowers in clusters of three to six, rich orange-yellow to lemon or cream, 7-12mm across with much longer tubes, spring to early summer. Central Chile at around 3500m to less than 300m in Tierra del Fuego, usually in volcanic or sandy screes, but has been recorded from montane swamps (seems unlikely). O. patagonicus has been rumoured as having maroon-purple flowers but almost certainly from the evidence of herbarium specimens, the flowers often loosing all trace of yellow when dried.
