    General Information

Plants terrestrial, 8-20 cm tall. Rhizome slender, many noded. Stem ascending, 1-4 cm, 4-6-leaved. Leaves subrosulate at base of stem, abaxially pale green, adaxially deep green with white venation, ovate to ovate-elliptic, 1-3 × 0.5-1.5 cm, base obtuse or broadly cuneate, apex acute; petiole-like base and tubular sheath 1-1.5 cm. Peduncle pale grayish green, 5-12 cm, pubescent, with 2-5 sterile bracts; rachis 1-5.5 cm, subdensely 5-20-flowered, secund; floral bracts lanceolate, 3-5 mm, pubescent, apex acuminate. Flowers opening weakly, white, tinged with green, small; pedicel and ovary cylindric-fusiform, 3-5 mm, sparsely pubescent. Sepals sparsely pubescent on outer surface, 1-veined; dorsal sepal ovate to ovate-oblong, 3-4 × 1.2-1.5 mm, apex obtuse; lateral sepals ovate to ovate-elliptic, oblique, 3-4 × 1.5-2.5 mm, apex obtuse. Petals spatulate, oblique, 3-4 × 1-1.5 mm, 1-veined, apex obtuse; lip ovate, 3-3.5 × 2-2.5 mm; hypochile concave-saccate, inside papillose; epichile ligulate, ca. 1.5 mm, slightly recurved. Column 1-1.5 mm. Fl. Jul-Aug. 2n = 30, 32, 40.

Leaves: blade uniformly green or with green lateral veins bordered by white or greenish white tissue, narrowly to broadly ovate, 1.1–3.2 × 0.5–1.8 cm, apex acute or obtuse. Inflorescences secund, infrequently loosely spiraled, 7–36-flowered; peduncle 3–18 cm. Flowers: lateral sepals 3–5.2 mm; petals distinct; hood 3–5.5 mm; lip narrowly saccate, lanceolate, 1.8–4.8 × 1.4–3.2 mm, apex acute, recurved or reflexed, inner surface with 2 or 4 glandular ridges; anther inflexed, not immersed in shallowly concave clinandrium, apex apiculate; pollinia blunt; rostellar beak 2-pronged, 0.2–0.6 mm, shorter than body of stigma; viscidium orbiculate. 2n = 30.

Slender, mostly 1–2 dm; scape with 2–4(5) bracts; lf- blades ovate or oblong, 1–3 cm, dark bluish-green, in our plants usually white-reticulate, the midrib and veins typically green, but the lateral and cross-veins bordered with white (or pale green); infl loose, spirally secund, 3–6 cm; galea 3–5.5 (avg 4) mm; lip 3–4 mm, deeply saccate, the prominent, slender, abruptly deflexed beak-tip with spreading margins; rostellar beak 0.2–0.6 mm, scarcely prolonged beyond the blunt anther; 2n=30. Dry or moist cold woods, especially under conifers; circumboreal, in our range s. to N.Y., Mich., and Minn., and in the mts. to N.C. July, Aug. Our plants, with white-veiny lvs, belong to var. ophioides Fernald, mainly of e. N. Amer. (G. o.; Peramium o.)

Plants 10-20 cm tall, slender. Rhizome with few, hairy roots and stolons creeping in a layer of moss not entering the soil. Stem glandular-hairy, with ovate, shortly petioled, dark green, net-veined leaves near the base and some bract-like leaves above. Inflorescence narrow, often one-sided, ± densely many-flowered. Bracts lanceolate, ± equalling in length the ovary. Flowers small, white, almost at right angles with the ovary. Sepals ovate, white, tinged with some green, glandular-pubescent, 4-5 mm long, the dorsal forming a hood with the lanceolate petals, the laterals spreading. Labellum undivided, with bag-shap

ed base and tongue-shaped anterior half, about 4 mm long. Column broad, c. 2 mm long. Ovary subsessile, glandular-hairy.
