kytanthus acutus is a species of plant in the Apocynaceae family. It is endemic to the Chilean sandy north and the extreme north of Argentina.

Description

It is a shrub 4-13 dm tall, globose, expanded. Leaves fleshy, green glaucous, glabrous, alternate, linear to oblong, uninervated, apex mucronate, margins coiled 3-7 cm x 5–9 mm, on a short petiole. Flowers apical, enclosed in adjacent leaves, calyx 5-sepals lanceolate, acute, hairy, 5–8 mm long; corolla campanulate, intense yellow, 6–8 mm long, limbus 13–17 mm long, 5 petals; 5 stamens above the corolla; ovary supero, 2 locules, style with claviform stigma, bifid at apex.

Fruit 2 follicles, cylindrical, chestnut, up to 2 dm long, leathery, woody, coiled resembling goat horns; seeds compressed, somewhat winged. Anemophilic dispersion.

Uses

It has a psychoactive, the alkaloid esquitantine.
