Echinopterys eglandulosa is a species of flowering plant in the Malpighiaceae family. This species is (A.Juss.) Small first described science in 1910.

CHARACTERISTICS
Little is documented about this plant. This is an odd viney shrub (it somewhat defies both categories). It is found throughout Mexico growing up and through other shrubs. The foliage is semi-evergreen but may totally drop temporarily if temperatures dip into the upper 20s°F. Large spikes of yellow flowers which individually reflect the flowers found on many plants in the Malpighiaceae, like the yellow orchid vine (Callaeum macroptera). This plant is seldom in the trade.

ECOLOGY
Many plants in the Malpighiaceae have more of a waxy resinous floral reward (rather than nectar) which are utilized by many species of native bees that use the substance to coat the insides of their underground larval caverns, helping them be waterproof, and as a substrate for the pollen that is stuck together in a glob for the larvae to eat while pupating underground.
