General Information

Pubescent shrub to ca. 2.5 m tall, the non-glandular trichomes erect and arching to appressed, to ca. 0.4 mm long. Twigs 2-6 mm diam., whitish pubescent; internodes 8-53 mm long. Leaf blade 3.5-14 X 1.3- 4.6 cm, ovate-lanceolate to elliptic-lanceolate (rarely broadly ovate to elliptic), acute to acuminate at apex, acute to rounded at base, coriaceous; margins serrate to crenate in the upper ca. 3/5 of blade; adaxial surface lustrous, dark-green when fresh, nearly glabrous except for a few trichomes on the veins, with the midvein slightly raised above, abaxial surface light-green when fresh, areolate, minutely whitish-pubescent, with 5 orders of raised venation. Petiole 8- 31 mm long, moderately pubescent. Principal inflorescence axis 4-13 cm long, moderately to densely whitish-pubescent; verticillasters moderately spaced; inter- nodes 5-31 mm long; cymes usually with 2-9 flowers; pedicels 2-9 mm long, mod- erately to densely whitish-pubescent; bracts 15-30 X 8-13 mm, ovate to broadly obovate, apically cuspidate, entire-margined or with several teeth (rarely serrate), sparsely pubescent to nearly glabrous on the abaxial surface, usually persisting throughout flowering and then falling, red or green and red-tinged. Calyx 12-17 mm long, 3.5-6 mm wide just below throat, red or green and red-tinged, sparsely to densely whitish-pubescent; upper lobe 3.2-8 mm long, acuminate; lower lobes 3-7 mm long, acuminate. Corolla 27-34 mm long, 5-6 mm wide just below throat, red to orange, finely whitish-pubescent on all portions exceeding the calyx except the central lobe of the lower lip; upper lip 5-7 mm long; lower lip 3- 5.5 mm long. Stamen filaments 2.7-3.3 mm long; connectives 29-36 mm long, the por- tion anterior to the filaments 13-15 mm long; pollen sacs 3-4 mm long. Style 37-44 mm long. Ovary 2.6-3.1 X 1.9-2.3 mm. Nutlets 3-3.5 X 1.5-1.8 mm.

Distribution

Endemic to pine forests and savannas of the Cordillera Central, Dominican Republic, at 900-2100 m.
