Tufted rhizomatous perennial varying from almost sessile to 30cm in height. Leaves lanceolate, 1.5-12cm long, long-stalked, whiskery-spiny toothed. Flowerheads solitary, narrowly top-shaped, to 2cm long, the outer bracts reddish glandular-hairy, the florets in various shades of blue or lilac, violet, rose, yellow or creamy-white. Southern Bolivia to the high puna of Chile and Argentina, on dryish moorland and open slopes at 3500-5000m. P. atacamensis from the same area, differs only in its wider, more densely glandular flowerheads, 1.7-3.5cm long.
