Polylepis tarapacana is a species of tree in the family Rosacea. It is found in Bolivia, Chile,Peru, and possibly Argentina. It is threatened by habitat loss.
It is a small tree or shrub 1 to 3 m high that grows at altitudes between 4000 and 5200 m in the Puna. It grows in semi-arid environments with annual rainfall of between 250 and 500 liters and where frosts can occur all year round.
It is the tree that grows at the highest altitude in the world, constituting the arboreal limit at 5200 m of altitude on the slopes of the Sajama volcano in the western Andes.
