Parastrephia quadrangularis (syn.Parastrephia lepidophylla) is a hardy, tall, yellow-orange flowering aromatic shrub, one of the few species of the South Americangenus Parastrephia. This tenacious plant, belonging to the family of asteraceae, isendemic to the South American Andes.

It grows in the dry mountainous regions of Puna on the border of four Andean states: in the southwest of Bolivia, in the north of Chile, in the south of Peru and in the north-west of Argentina. It occurs most often at altitudes from 3000 to 4700 m.

This plant characteristic for the local environment and sometimes even dominant plant is a domestic species in dry areas, where only about 100 mm of water precipitation falls per year (Prague around 550 mm). In addition, rainfall is distributed irregularly, the dry season usually lasts eight months and sometimes does not rain all year round. Plants grow in full sun, usually on slopes facing north, in the southern hemisphere they are the most sunlit places. They tolerate unscathed intermittent freezing temperatures down to -8 C, as well as occasional snow cover lasting up to several weeks a year. Stony soil with a minimum of organic matter tends to be highly acidic, having a pH of 4.0 to 5.5 pH.

Perennial, almost creeping, strongly branched shrubup to 50, rarely 150 cm, shedding resin after injury. The twigs are covered with fleshy, linear, entire, scaly, sessile, spirally arranged leaves2 to 5 mm long. At the end of woolly hairy twigs with a diameter of 2 mm, individual flower outfits grow with bisexual, tubular, yellow flowers about 5 mm long; Tongue-shaped flowers are not developed. The bell-shaped sheathis multi-row and has sparsely hairy green bracts.

The fruits are hairy achenes with light fluff, which serve to reproduce these shrubs. In a dry, rocky and heavily windy environment, however, it is a problem for achenes to germinate at all. Therefore, some village communities set up self-help "nurseries" to grow new plants and plant very slow-growing seedlings around the villages.
