The family Casuarinaceae is a strange family. The plants that it contains look like conifers, and seem to have cones, but are in fact classified as flowering plants or Angiosperms. The genus Gymnostoma in New Caledonia contains 8 species all of which are endemic to the island. Gymnostoma deplancheanum is a small, conifer-like tree with gorgeous spring green, thick, needle-like shoots. It will make an extremely attractive and robust ornamental but apparently is practically unknown in cultivation.
