A large cactus to 10 m tall with slender, ascending, ridged and well armed, bluish branches and white flowers that are followed by magenta colored, edible fruit. Pilosocereus polygonus is native to the Caribbean and is found in southern Florida, the Bahamas, Cuba and Hispaniola. In cultivation it does best in dry tropical climates in USDA Zones 10 and above.

Very rare in the Florida Keys, this cactus is considered both state and federally endangered, although it is more widely distributed in the Bahamas and the West Indies. It can reach 30 feet in height and is columnar with occasional branches. Brown below and green above The trunk has 9 to 15 ribs, and is protected with numerous clusters of yellow-colored spines. The flowers are two inches in diameter and bell-shaped, and the fruit is a fleshy, reddish drupe. Key Tree Cactus grows on hammocks and dry shrubby habitats. The fruit is edible but not tasty.
