Barkleyanthus salicifolius is a shrub of flowering plants in the daisy family. It is the only representative of the monotypic genus Barkleyanthus, although it is sometimes also listed as Senecio salignus. It is native to North America, from the southern United States to Central America. It is popularly known as chilca, jarilla or azomiate, among others. It blooms in the dry season (January to April), distinguished by its striking yellow flowers and the sometimes foul smell of them.
Barkleyanthus salicifolius is a woody, perennial shrub, very ramified almost from the base, 1-2 m tall; Some arborescent specimens reach 4 m. Leaves narrow, lanceolate, alternate, weakly petiolate. Capitulescences in tops or panicles (dense in axillary and terminal clusters). The involucres are hemispherical or campanulate, 5-8 mm in diameter. The corolla is yellow. It has a chromosome number of x = 30. The fruit measures less than 2 mm and is a dry claviform cypselle with a white bristle phallus, which helps its aerial dispersion.
