    Alocasia Lauterbachiana

The Alocasia Lauterbachiana, also popularly known as the Purple Sword, is a type of Alocasia plant, which is perennial and evergreen. It’s very commonly found decorating homes and gardens, as it is suitable for both indoors and outdoors.

It is known as the Purple Sword because of its appearance, as it stands upright, with the leaves having a long spear shape.

The leaves also have dual shades, going from a dark green to purple, with reddish undersides and scalloped edges. These leaves can grow to be up to 2 feet long, and their glossy texture can often make them look like they’re artificial.

They look very pretty as decoration and can be quite easy to take care of. But before you decide to get one of these plants, let us tell you everything you need to know about them.

The Alocasia Lauterbachia, known as the Purple Sword, is a specific type of Alocasia plant, but let’s take a look at the full classification:

    • Family: Araceae
    • Genus: Alocasia
    • Species: A. Lauterbachiana

The Lauterbachiana is a species of plant within the Alocasia Genus, but what exactly is an Alocasia plant?

Well, the Alocasia is a Genus that contains more than 79 different species of perennial plants that also produce flowers, with all of them originally coming from the tropical and sub-tropical forests of Asia and Australia.

They’re grouped into the same Genus due to the many features that they share. For example, they all have prominent broad-leaved foliage and a rhizomatous root system.

The plants belonging to the Alocasia Genus are commonly referred to as ‘African Masks’ or the ‘Elephant-ear plants’, due to the shared appearance of their leaves.

These plants are most often used as decoration in homes and gardens. However, they are also highly used for hybridization and cultivation, which then results in new unique plants that belong to the same family.

Before the Alocasia Lauterbachiana was classed as an Alocasia plant, it went through a few different classifications, giving it an interesting history.

The plant was first described by Heinrich Gustav in 1898, and it was classed into the Schizocasia Genus. Later on, in 1968, Dan H. Nicolson changed its classification to group it into the Xenophya Genus.

Finally, in 1990 (not too long ago), the botanist Alistar Hay renamed the plant to its current name, and classified it into its proper group, as an Alocasia plant.
