Arum purpureospathum식물/들꽃-천남성과(Araceae) 2022. 10. 15. 08:22
국표에는 없다.
Dormancy: Summer
Height: 8" tall
Culture: Part Sun
Origin: Crete
This relatively new discovery from southwest Crete was named in 1987 by arum expert Peter Boyce. The 8" long green arrow-like leaves that emerge in fall and grow all winter are replaced by 10" tall inflorescences in late spring as the leaves go dormant. The attractive inflorescence with the mild aroma of aged cow manure is composed of a dark purple spathe and equally dark spadix. Obviously since they go dormant in the summer, they are exceptionally drought tolerant.
A species endemic to SW Crete. This form has unusual deep reddish/purple flowers. to 35cm long.

Arum purpureospathum – SEEDS OF PEACE
Arum purpureospathum is endemic to the island of Crete. Photos 1-3 were contributed by the UC Botanical Garden. Photo 4 was taken by Nhu Nguyen at the UC Botanical Garden of the plants blooming in early April. Photo 5 by Gianluca Corazza who took it in habitat in early May, when plants were fruiting.
This species is quite interesting over a long period of time. In my northern California garden the large leaves appear in September. They are very shiny and even look nice when rained on. Flowering occurs between November and February depending on the year. In the third photo below the leaves are dying but the plants have green fruit in April. By July the fruit has turned red but in between at times the fruit was green and red. The fifth and sixth photos shows the seeds and tubers on a 1 cm grid. Photos by Mary Sue Ittner.
