The genus Rhipsalis is native to M and S America. Only Rhipsalis baccifera is also distributed in Africa, Madagascar and the entire Caribbean, where it is differentiated into subspecies: subsp. baccifera from Mexico/Florida to Bolivia subsp. cleistogama Bolivia, West German S-America subsp. hileiabaiana in Brazil subsp. shaferi Paraguay, Bolivia, Argentina subsp. mauritiana in trop. Africa, Madagascar, Comoros, Mascrenes, Seychelles and Sri Lanka subsp. erythrocarpa Central Africa subsp. horrida in Madagascar The "whip cactus" is a grateful plant for the plant lover, which usually thrives without particularly unusual cultivation conditions. Of course, there are also species that can hardly be cultivated even in botanical gardens (e.B. from the flood forests in the lowlands of Brazil). Most of them, however, can be kept well in living rooms even without a greenhouse. One of the best and most complete collections can be found at the University of Bonn, which can be visited on request.
