L. discolor is a species distinguished by having broad ovate leaves. The male plant has large reddish heads, glabrous floral bracts and a broadly clavate abortive stigma. It is apparently nearest to L. procerum (Salisb.ex Knight) Williams which has narrower leaves and smaller heads in the male plant. It also differs from L. strobilinum (L. ) Druce which has densely pubescent floral bracts in the male and very much larger cones in the female.
