Angelonia Archangel ™ Pink

Len Lamm of the Corner Store Garden Center introduced me to a flowering annual that is new to me but looks like a worthwhile addition to your garden.  “Archangel pink” angelonia (angelonia angustifolia) is a hybrid “summer snapdragon” developed by the Ball Seed Company.  Even though it is often called the “summer snapdragon” it is actually not a true snapdragon and is in the same family of plants as penstemon and foxglove.

Standing tall through the hot, dry months of summer, the Angelonia ‘Archangel’ Series are quite impressive.

More commonly known as Summer Snapdragons, their fantastic floral spires work well in gardens and pots. The bright colours in the series enables you to mix and match with spectacular results. The blooms are large, (three times the size of other varieties) and they look similar to snap dragons. They are well branched stems with a compact, uniform habit.

Grow Summer Snapdragons in moderately fertile to humus rich, well drained soil. Choose a sunny position, water in to establish, then you only need bother if rainfall is low.

The flowers begin as early as late spring and will bloom on through the heat and humidity of summer right into early autumn.

Summer Snapdragons are suitable for growing in pots as well as garden beds. They will over winter in warmer climates, so can be treated as perennials. In cold climates, they are usually annuals - unless you can offer them winter protection.
