Garden Pinks are perhaps the best known of all the garden Dianthus and for good reason. Attractive foliage, beautiful flowers that last from early summer, often well into autumn and a fragrance that can hardly fail to delight. Many traditional varieties have been grown in our gardens for over a century and if legend is to be believed, they have been around for much longer. Tradition has it that Pinks grew from the tears of Mary as she follwed her son, Jesus, to Calvary. Individual plants, or for real impact, multiple plantings, will all delight. Excellent as a cut flower. I have occasionally seen it said these are short lived plants. If they are planted in a sunny well drained location, especially in winter and old growth removed before it decays, then if my grandfather's collection was anything to go by, they can last in excess of 30 years! Doris is a Very fragrant traditional variety with silVery fragrant foliage and double pale pink flowers with a red centre. Superb fragrance. Use in the garden borders of can be planted in a pot or other container. Use a good quality compost. For best results add 20% horticultural grit to ensure good drainage and add a good layer of grit, shinge or similar on top of the compost for the leaves to rest on and ensure you feed regularly as a hungry plant is a poor performer. We recommend Osmoscote pro 5-6 month applied in the early spring. One application gives all the nutrients the plant requires for the whole year.
