One of the most unique aspects of this type of freesia is its scent, which is strong and sweet, although you can only smell it when the petals are open. It produces double blooms of a bright-red color but has yellow highlights at each petal’s base. It is a slow grower compared to those freesias that grow in the Fall and Winter, but it is well worth the wait.

Freesias normally begin to bloom 10-12 weeks after planting and require very little maintenance. Grow as a perennial in zones 9 and above (plant in the fall) or as an annual or container plant in colder climates (plant in the spring). Their beautiful colors and wonderful fragrance are worth it!

Freesia is a popular summer flower, in part due to their pleasant scent. These red with yellow throat flowers do well in containers and make lovely cut flowers, especially for creating wedding boutonnieres, corsages and arrangements. Used for 7th Wedding Anniversaries. Also symbolizes innocence and thoughtfulness.

Full sun, rich soil and good drainage are essential to get these to bloom. Must be planted/started when temperatures are at 45-50° at night (for at least 4-6 weeks) with full sun at day.  It will take approximately 6-8 weeks before growth appears.
