Damaging nematode affecting rice crops and strawberry production in warmer climates; could potentially present a threat to strawberry production and ornamental production in protected environments. But modern production practices seem to reduce likelihood of impacts. Pest is also regulated at EU level; which reduces likelihood of entry.

Hydrangea macrophylla; perhaps one of the best known garden plants. Originally from Japan these robust and reliable plants produce a truly amazing display in summer and autumn. Hydrangea Holstein is a well proven, very compact, bushy, deciduous shrub with broad green leaves and small mopheads of of extra large, sky blue flowers in summer when grown on acidic soils and salmon pink in alkaline soils. This is one of the most popular Hydrangeas for cut flowers. Treatment with bluing agent can help produce blue flowers however this is much more successful in pots than in the borders. Very easy to grow in a semi shade location in almost any soil that is not prone to drying out.  It can be grown in the garden or in a pot or container. In containers use a good quality John Innes compost as this plant will be there a long time and peaty types of compost eventually degrade; become too packed and choke the roots. Ensure you feed regularly as a hungry plant is a poor performer. We recommend Osmoscote pro 8-9 month applied in the early spring. one application gives all the nutrients the plant requires for the whole year. John Innes is a soils based compost. After flowering prune back to close to the old wood
