Leptospermum Merinda
A low growing and spreading shrub to around a metre high and wide, with small mid-green leaves. It has profuse magenta flowers in spring which create a stunning display. Perfect for pot culture or as a feature plant in the garden. A great low maintenance plant for moist but well drained soils. Prune back after flowering and feed in spring with a good native plant fertilizer.

Leptospermum is a genus of about 83 species, all but three occurring in Australia. They are commonly known as 'tea trees' due to the practice of early European settlers of using the leaves of some species as a tea substitute.Leptospermum 'Merinda' is one of a number of colourful cultivars developed at Bywong Nursery at Bungendore, New South Wales. It is a hybrid between between Leptospermum 'Pink Cascade' and Leptospermum 'Aphrodite'. L. 'Merinda' is a small shrub which grows to about 1 metre high with an arching habit of growth. It has narrow, lance-shaped leaves to about 12 mm long, tapering to a point. The 5-petalled, magenta flowers are larger than is typical for the genus being about 15 mm diameter with numerous small stamens surrounding the central stigma. The flowers have a green centre. This hybrid is reported to be sterile and does not set seed.
Leptospermum 'Merinda' is a very attractive cultivar which has become very popular in cultivation. Based on the reports to date, the cultivar is a hardy shrub for moist soils in temperate climates. Plants prefer full sun or partial shade and can be pruned after flowering to promote dense growth and promote flowering for the next season.

Leptospermum “Rudolph” is the other significant hybrid that grows into an upright, medium shrub with attractive purplish foliage.
The foliage is complemented by large, red flowers that cover the branches in spring and summer.
Growth habit, foliage and flowers are all attractive features. This is one of our favourite tea trees and is grown as a foreground shrub in many of our garden beds.

Leptospermum ‘Rudolph’ is a hybrid developed by Bywong Nursery in southern NSW. Its parents are L. spectabile and a burgundy leafed form of L. morrisonii.
Leptospermum ‘Rudolph’ is a medium, upright shrub with purplish foliage and large bright red flowers. Both parents have provided this hybrid with flower and foliage colour.
Leptospermum spectabile is a rare tea tree from the Colo River north of Sydney. This is a spectacular species with large red flowers. Unfortunately, L. spectabile does not like our cold climate garden. We have tried to grow the species a few times with no success.
All is not lost because Leptospermum ‘Rudolph’ survives and thrives in our garden. Its flowers are similar in size and colour to L. spectabile and cover the plants in summer. The burgundy foliage, inherited from L. morrisonii, is a bonus. Some of our specimens are over five years old.

Leptospermum “Aphrodite” is a medium, spreading shrub with small aromatic leaves and large, bright pink flowers that appear in spring and summer.
This hybrid appreciates pruning after the flowers fade and would be a useful addition to a native shrubbery. Small native birds use the dense foliage for nesting.

It has lush green foliage that contrasts well with the bright pink flowers in spring. The blooming branches are great for cut flower bunches. The bushy habit makes it an ideal screening plant that tolerates damp as well as dry soils. Best in a sunny position for best flowering. It is tolerant of moderate frosts.
