African Daisy

The flowers of this African daisy are striking white pinwheels. Circling a central disc, the petals are broad at the base, then tubular, then broad at the tip, like little spoons. Frequently grown as an annual ‘white Whirls’ is descended from a perennial native to South Africa that is favored by breeders in search of showy flowers for gardens and greenhouses. A compact cultivar, it has oval green or gray-green leaves borne densely on a free- branching stem.

A spectacular bloomer, ‘white Whirls’ bears large daisies in profusion, Each flower lasts about a week and at peak bloom a single mature plant may be almost obscured by flowers. This sun-loving plant prefers well-drained soil and relatively cool summers. Avoid overly fertile soils, which will cause stems to flop. Deadhead regularly to encourage continued flowering. Where hardy, it is wonderful in borders or cascading down banks. It also excels as a bedding or container plant. Grown in a container, it can be wintered indoors in a cool bright position.
