General Description

 

With glossy dark gray-green foliage, Firecrackerbush lives up to its moniker from summer to winter with clustered scarlet red flowers that look like elongated trumpets. A rather open-branched and free-formed evergreen shrub, it is native from the extreme southwestern United States into Mexico and Central America.

Its leaves are oval or lance-shaped, and dark-green with hints of gray-green. The tops of the leaves are glossy while the undersides are lightly hairy. At the tips of the branches, from late summer to the start of winter, clusters of bright-scarlet to orange-red flowers form. Each is long and tubular with four petals at the open end. The flowers attract hummingbirds.

Grow Firecrackerbush in fast-draining, moist soil in full sun for finest growth. In hot areas shade in the midday is best and in general this shrub should remain slightly drier in the winter. It tolerates drought and intense summer heat. It will grow as a root-hardy perennial in areas that have freezes in the winter. Use it in a naturalistic planting among rocks or incorporate it into the mixed border, knowing that it may be pruned back after flowering ends. Look for cultivars that have stretched the available flower colors into the magenta and pink range.
