Genus: Aster
Common Name: Michaelmas daisy 'Crimson Brocade'
Latin Name: Aster novi-belgii 'Crimson Brocade'
Variety: 'Crimson Brocade'
Family Name: Asteraceae
Plant Description:Asters are a superb group of flowers for bringing late colour into the garden and this shorter variety is particularly useful for the smaller garden. They are easily managed though many taller varieties benefit from some support in exposed situations. Always put your supporting twigs or meshing in early because there is nothing that looks worse than a flopped bunch of stems that have been bundled together with string in an effort to get them to stand up again. A. Crimson Brocade' is a late flowering, border perennial growing to around 90 cm tall and if grown in a sheltered spot with good light you can usually get away without providing any support. The dark green leaves are elliptic with a smooth shiny surface. Clusters of semi -double, crimson flowers are produced at the top of branching stems. By late in the season it might have succumbed to mildew but such is the density of its flowering that the diseased leaves are not noticeable.
