This well-known, small bushy annual, flowering continuously all summer (even longer if you bring in and pot a plant or two for a window-sill), is as near as you can get to an instant flower, the first buds appearing in a very few weeks from sowing. For this reason, always have a packet to hand - if all else fails, a packet sown in June will quickly cheer up an otherwise bare patch. May be hardy outside in some reasons with frost-free protection in winter.
A dwarf, double French Marigold, the flowers a rich maroon-mahogany with large, bright orange tufted centre crests. Very easy. 8ins (20cm)
This genus includes some of the commonest and most popular annuals grown. In spite of their common names, they all originate from Mexico. All are easy to grow and are useful for cutting.
