     A tall, robust annual 60 to 120 cm high. The inflorescence is a panicle made up of from five to 15 sessile erect branches. The spikelets are brownish to purple in colour, being crowded on one side of the rachis. The spikelet is subtended by two glumes within which are two florets. The lower floret is staminate while the upper one is perfect.

     BRIEF DESCRIPTION A tall, robust, vigorous grass up to 120 cm high. USES Very palatable and used for pasture. It can be grazed as early as three weeks after sowing when the grass is 30-40 cm tall and it can be grazed up to five times in a season. It makes good hay and silage. Also used for erosion control after timber clearing. GROWING PERIOD Summer-growing annual grass. Require 40 days for grass crop and 100 days for grain crop. COMMON NAMES Shirohie millet, Japanese millet. FURTHER INF Scientific synonym: E. crus-galli var. frumentacea. Shirohie millet is widely cultivated in the tropics and subtropics. It is fairly drought tolerant but will not survive fire when dry enough to burn. Yields of up to 35 t/ha of green material can be obtained.

Culms robust, erect, 1–1.5 m tall. Leaf sheaths smooth and glabrous; leaf blades linear, 20–50 × 1.2–2.5 cm, glabrous, margins thickened and wavy. Inflorescence erect, lanceolate, 10–30 cm, axis robust, scabrous along edges and with tubercle-based hairs; racemes 2–6 cm, robust, usually branched, closely spaced and overlapping. Spikelets purplish, tardily deciduous, plump, ovate or obovate-elliptic, 3.5–4 mm, hispid along veins with tubercle-based hairs; lower glume 1/3 as long as spikelet, acute; upper glume slightly shorter than spikelet; lower lemma herbaceous, sterile, acute or with a 0.5–2 cm awn; upper lemma 2.8–3.5 mm. Caryopsis long persistent, eventually falling. Fl. and fr. Aug–Oct. 2n = 54, 56, 72.
