잎은 비늘 모양으로 끝이 뭉뚝하고, 가운데것은 모나며 옆의 것은 타원 모양 삼각형이고 길이 1.8~2.4mm이다. 잎의 앞면은 녹색이고 뒷면은 노란빛을 띤 녹색으로 2개의 뚜렷한 흰 줄이 있으며, 향기가 강하다. 꽃은 암수한그루로 5월에 핀다. 수꽃은 달걀 모양이고 황색이며, 암꽃도 달걀 모양이고 길이 3mm 정도로 8개의 비늘조각으로 이루어진다. 열매는 구과로 9월에 익으며 타원형이고 길이 9mm, 너비 6mm 정도로 짙은 갈색이며 익으면 벌어진다.
