Paeonia turcica, the Turkish peony, is a plant that is native to the mountains of Eastern Anatolia Region and Mediterranean region of Turkey. It is also called the bear rose in Turkey. The flowers are produced in late spring with a deep maroon red colouring on 65 cm stems. The blooms are large, up to 12 cm in diameter and bear a boss of rich orange stamens. This peony was once included with the species P. mascula.
Description
Paeonia turcica resembles P. kesrouanensis in its glabrous carpels, but has reddish foliage upon emerging and the flowers are usually much darker pink, veering towards red.
It is usually found on mountain slopes and peak plains. The plant emerges as a bud from the soil before many plants in the Eastern Anatolia Region, including the Ferula plant, in spring.
It has been used for medicinal purposes in many places from history to the present day.
