Laelia rubescens is a species of orchid native to Mexico and Central America.
Distribution
Laelia rubescens is native to the Central American countries Belize, Costa Rica, E1 Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua and much of Southern/Central Mexico. It also occurs in the wild in Florida and Cuba as an escapee from cultivation, having been intentionally introduced as an ornamental plant. Laelia rubescens grows in seasonally dry, deciduous forests as an epiphyte and occasionally as a lithophyte at elevations below 1700 meters.
Found in Mexico, Guatemala, Belize, El Salvador, Honduras and Nicaragua in wooded regions in seasonally dry, deciduous forests at elevations of sealevel to 1700 meters on exposed tree trunks where they withstand full sun for hours, yet get plenty of air movement to cool down as a medium sized, hot to cool growing epiphyte and occasional lithophyte with compressed, ovoid, wrinkled, dark green pseudobulbs subtended by papery sheaths carrying a single [rarely 2] leathery, apical, oblong-ovate, spreading or suberect, leathery, v-shaped in cross-section, obtuse, basally clasping leaf that blooms in the autumn and winter on a new growth with a to 3' [90 cm] long, terete inflorescence enveloped by papery sheaths, carrying fragrant wintergreen scented flowers all clustered at the apex that may or may not close at night.
Mount on tree fern slabs and give bright light, ample water while growing and a dry winter rest after flowering
