Dendrobium subuliferum is native to New Guinea. In Irian Jaya (western New Guinea), these plants are meet on the Vogelkop peninsula, in the Gautier and Star mountains, and on Mt.Goliath. In Papua, they grow in the provinces of West Sepik, the Southern Upland and Morobe. They usually occur in primary and secondary forests at heights of 300-2000 m, but sometimes grow on the ground in shady moss-covered locations.
It is a mini-miniature sized, hot to cool growing epiphyte and occasional terrestrial, which reaching a height of 3 cm, with close set, ovoid to narrowly fusiform, 0.3-0.9 cm long pseudobulbs carrying 1 to 2, apical, distichous, conduplicate, erect to suberect, thinly leathery, usually rigid, sometimes minutely papillose, ligulate, acute to obtuse, rigid, curved, 1.8-2.8 cm long leaves with minute warts on the margins.
The Awl Shaped Dendrobium blooms on a terminal, very short inflorescence arising towards the apex of the leafy stem and carry a single to rarely 2, erect, fully open, sometimes fragrant flowers occurring in the fall through spring. The flowers are 0.8-1.2 cm in diameter. Sharp flower elements are arranged like an open, 5-pointed star. The flowers are white with a purple tinge along the lip of the lip. The dorsal petal has several tiny dots along the bottom edge. Almost oval petals have delicate growths along the banks. The sharp tip is long-lanceolate, straight and curved. It is almost 3-bay with a 2-section, transverse bead.
