Commelina erecta ("Saint Lucia flower") is a perennial herbaceous plant in the family Commelinaceae.

Description

It is a herbaceous, perennial plant, with an erect or prostrate growth habit. It reaches 20 to 90 cm in height, branches almost from the base. The stems are green, fleshy and cylindrical. The leaves are lanceolate and their sheaths cover buds capable of producing branches. The first tillers appear when the plant has 3 to 4 leaves. At low densities each plant is capable of producing approximately 50 basal branches. The inflorescences are protected by a green spathe and the flowers comprise two blue or white petals attached at the end, a smaller white petal, numerous yellow stigmas and a stamen. It is very attractive to bees that carry out pollination. Leaf simple, glossy and lanceolate, 15 cm x 3 cm, narrow to very narrowly ovate, somewhat pointed, towards the base it becomes rounded and with a pair of small lobes (atria) on the sides, then it becomes tubular forming the sheath that surrounds the stem, with white hairs mainly on the sheath. The fruits are capsules with three seeds, two kidney-shaped and the third ovoid.​

It spreads sexually (producing up to 1000 seeds per plant) and asexually, by sympodial rhizomes (short and grouped in a crown) and monopodial (10 to 20 cm long). The stems, when they touch the ground, emit adventitious roots at the basal nodes.
