Camellia japonica 'C.M. Hovey'

The medium sized, perfectly formed flowers of C.M. Hovey are a rich deep red ranging into dark pinks at times. It may be that weather and/or sun exposure affect the coloration of this late season flowering Camellia. This is an heirloom Camellia developed and named for the American nurseryman. It has been popular since its introduction and has also garnered many names over the years like Colonel Firey. This Camellia has somewhat of an upright habit and develops into a medium to large evergreen shrub or small tree.

C.M. Hovey Camellia is also known as: Colonel Firey, Duc de Devonshire, Firey King, Solaris, William S. Hastie, and possibly others.

Camellias are the rose of winter in southern gardens, with their colorful blossoms held against deep rich green glossy foliage on a naturally upright to rounded evergreen shrub. Pick the flowers and float them in a bowl of water to bring their beauty indoors. Camellias prefer an acidic, humus rich soil with an organic mulch and average moisture. Once well-established they need little additional care and will continue to perform for years to come. Most Camellias do best where they get light shade or morning sun and the light filtered shade of pines seems to be perfect.
