Description

Primula elatior 'Gold Lace' is a semi-evergreen to evergreen perennial with rosettes of oval green leaves sometimes tinged with red. It grows up to 8 inches (20 cm) tall. The spring flowers have a golden center and gold-rimmed deep mahogany petals.

Much appreciated in the Victorian era, Primula elatior 'Gold Lace' does not go unnoticed when in late winter, early spring from its rosette come the particular flat flowers that seem to be made of velvet,
dark mahogany red with a showy central eye and golden petal margin.

It is a cultivar of the Polyanthus group, dated 1780, extremely resistant, which over time gives more and more flowers as long as the head is divided every two years. On the terrace, grow it in a pot with a diameter of at least 22 centimeters, you will be able to enjoy its company more and it will be easier to take care of it to move it over the seasons, in fact it wants at least half a day of sun during the flowering period, which coincides with the end of winter until the beginning of spring, and instead filtered sun or partial shade in the rest period during which it will still maintain the foliage as it is an evergreen hybrid.

To prolong flowering, remember to remove the faded stems and every 15-20 days add a liquid fertilizer for green plants to the irrigation water, taking care not to exceed the minimum recommended doses.

At the beginning of autumn, repot it in a larger pot containing a mixture of equal parts good garden soil and peat with the addition of a few handfuls of inert material such as pumice, lapillus to promote drainage and slow-release granular fertilizer.

Polyanthus are natural crosses between Primula veris and P. vulgaris or common primrose, on each stem they bear more flowers differing from common primroses which instead have only one. They began to be used in 1670 and their great admirer was the famous garden designer Gertrude Jekyll.
