Classification

Cabbage (Brassica oleracea L. var. capitata L.) is a dicotyledonous, herbaceous and biennial plant, which is cultivated as an annual plant. It belongs to the botanical family Brassicaceae, formerly known as Cruciferae (for having cross-shaped flowers), and under which other important edible crops are also found. Some of these belong to the same species (Brassica oleracea) but from a different botanical group or variety, such as broccoli (B. oleracea var. italica), cauliflower (B. oleracea var. botrytis), Brussels sprouts (B. oleracea var. gemmifera), collard greens (B. oleracea var. acephala), and kholrabi (B. oleracea var. caulorapa).

Other important edible crops that also belong to the same Brassicaceae botanical family include leaf mustard [Brassica juncea (several subsp.)], Chinese cabbage (two species, Brassica rapa subsp. chinensis and Brassica rapa subsp. pekinensis), turnip (Brassica rapa subsp. rapa), radish (Rhaphanus sativus) and watercress (Nasturtium officinale).

Some
authors indicate that the place of origin of the species Brassica oleracea was western Europe (e.g., the coasts of England and western France), where it has been found in the wild. On the other hand, others consider that much of the evidence found points as its place of origin to the area of the eastern Mediterranean, and also to Asia Minor, from where it later spread to various parts of Europe.
