Nolana foliosa is one of the 49 species belonging to the genus Nolana present in Chile, which corresponds to the Solanaceae family. This particular species is endemic with a limited distribution on the coastal edge of the Arica and Parinacota Region and the Tarapacá Region in Chile.
Description
It is described as a perennial herb that occurs globosely. Its stems are creeping or erect and have brown coloration. Its basal stems are somewhat woody. Its leaves are succulent, dense linearly and with revolute edges. It has a little dense coverage of short hairs, practically invisible to the eye. It has small flowers with a very short pedicel, has a calyx formed by 5 lanceolate sepals united at the base, has a corolla bell-shaped gamopetal and lobed, being the upper lobe larger than the others, this is its main characteristic, lilac to light blue, the inner part of the tube is dark lilac to purple and the bottom of the tube is pale yellow. White stamens and anthers with white pollen.
Its fruit is a black nut and in each mericarp can have 2 to 3.
This species is an interior or sub-Andean species, which grows on roadsides, in sandy - stony substrates

This species is known simply as 'Sigh'.
Importance
This species known as 'Sigh' is one of the emblematic flowers that appear during the flowering of the phenomenon called Flowering Desert.
It has been found on the way to the town of Codpa in the region of Arica-Parinacota.
However, the holotype corresponds to the Quebrada El Nueve in Cobija, in the coastal sector of the Tarapacá Region.
It is considered a plant with ornamental value.
Threats
One of the main threats of this species are anthropic factors such as urbanization and occupation of the coastal edge, by anthropic action by tourism and flower collection.Another threat is the grazing of goats and mules in the area.
