The friar's crownor sunchu Encelia canescens is a species of flowering plant in the daisy family.
Distribution
It grows spontaneously in Chile up to 2000 m altitude in the Andes,and in Bolivia and Peru, in the high Andean valleys up to 3500 m a.s.l.
Description
small shrub very branchy, evergreen reaching a height of up to 80 cm; stems striated-furrowed, foliage of variable color from green to cinderella. Leaves pale green, alternate, oblong, 3-7 cm long by 0,7-2 cm broad, long petiolate, glabrous or pubescent on both sides. Inflorescences in terminal chapters, with from 8 to 14 yellow petals in daisy, with dark brown center. Hermaphroditic flowers, each flower with 5 stamens and a pistil with bifid stigma. The fruit is a pubescent achene 5 mm long.
Uses
Traditional medicine attributes to the decoction of the leaves various properties; with a little honey he uses it to treat lung ailments; Serene and fasting is taken to relieve jaundice and with the stems as a diuretic and to relieve stomach pain. The infusion of the leaves and stems is used to try to regularize menstrual flow. Fresh leaves or resin are chewed to whiten teeth.
