General Information

Herb, 0.5-3 dm, from woody, fusiform rootstock, the stems ascending to erect (rarely twining in trifoliolate forms), one to few, simple (rarely branching above), strongly angled, sparsely to densely hirsutulous or glabrate. Stipules linear to ovate-lanceolate, acute to acuminate, persistent, 4-15 mm long, 14(-5) mm wide. Petioles angled, (1.6-)2-4(-5) cm. Leaflet 1 (often terminally 3 on longer stems), suborbicular to reniform, or ovate to oblong when more than 1, apex obtuse, broadly rounded, occassionally emarginate to mucronate, base truncate, broadly rounded to cuneate or subcordate, (2-)3-5(-6) cm long, (2.5-)3-6(-8) cm wide, rugose, sparsely to densely strigulose above, reticulate and hirsutulous beneath, especially along the veins, becoming glabrate with age, gland-dotted on both surfaces, terminal petiolule (if trifoliolate) 2-15 mm, the laterals subobsolete to 3 mm, stipels linear, 1-2.5 mm. Inflorescences not exceeding the leaves, l-3(-3.5) cm, unbranched, flowers numerous and clustered into crowded heads, peduncle subobsolete to 2 cm, pedicels 1-3 mm. Bracts linear-subulate, acuminate, caducous, 2-5 mm long, 0.5-1 mm wide. Calyx equalling or slightly exceeding the corolla, 7-10 mm, densely hirsutulous and gland-dotted, tube 1.5-2 mm, lobes linear-lanceolate, long-acuminate, 7-8 mm, vexillar sinus 2 mm. Corolla lemon yellow, 6-9.5 mm. Standard elliptic-ovate, emarginate, glabrous, 6-7.5 mm long, 6-6.5 mm wide, auricles 1 mm, claw 1-1.5 mm. Wings narrowly oblong, glabrous, 6.5-7 mm long, 1.5-2 mm wide, claw 2 mm. Keel blades falcate, glabrous, 6.5-7 mm long, 2-2.5 mm wide, claw 2-2.5 mm. Stamens 6-7 mm. Fruits oblong-elliptic, compressed, hirsutulous, and gland-dotted, 1.3-1.8 cm long, 5-7 mm wide, beak 0.5-1 mm. Seeds suborbicular, compressed, brown, black or mottled, 3 mm long, 3 mm wide, hilum ovate, 1 mm, strophiole lobes cuneate.

Distribution

U. S. coastal plain (North Carolina to eastern Texas) and inland to eastern Tennessee (Fig. 12). Occurring primarily in sandy soils of pine and oak woodlands, in old fields and by roadsides; at low elevations.
