Alstroemeria spathulata

glaucous and succulent with notably spathulate leaves. Flowers funnel-shaped, with narrowly spathulate to oblanceolate pointed tepals 3-4cm long the inner three slightly narrower, pale rose-pink, streaked red over yellowish on all three inner segments, very rarely pure white, in umbels of three to twelve. Chile and Argentina, in screes of the central cordilleras at 1500-3300m. The sterile shoots of A. spathulata form characteristic fleshy grey rosettes, reminiscent of echeverias. In cultivation under glass it is extremely prone to elongate grotesquely, collapsing and sprawling weakly along the ground without flowering. On the other hand it has been grown and flowered perfectly in character right in the open and without protection on a sheltered slope in eastern Scotland.
