Notholaena bryopoda is a fern, a member of the family Pteridaceae, subfamily Cheilanthoideae; this genus has approximately 30 species of which at least 24 occur in Mexico, is closely related to the genus Cheilathes, and many species of both genera have been transferred from one to another over time; the genus name (Notholaena) comes from the Greek "nothos" (false) and "chlaina" (cape, blanket), while the species (N. bryopoda) comes from "bryo" (sapling, shoot) and "podos" (foot).
Rhizome: compact, horizontal, up to 2 mm in diameter, with scales of linear-lanceolate shape up to 9 mm long; fronds: 10 – 18 x 2 – cm, growing in the form of a bunch ; petiole: 1/3 of the length of the frond, brown, with a groove at the top (adaxial), with some scattered scales; lamina: lanceolate to narrowly deltate, bipinnate, firm consistency; pinnae - from 5 to 13 pairs, without hairs, the lower surface (abaxial) presents a "powder" of pale yellow or cream starch; Soros - form marginal bands on the segments (pinnules); indusium: does not present, the edges of the segments (pinnules) are bent downwards covering up to half of each segment.
