There is a lot of discussion about a real red Clematis. We know some 'red' Clematis but none are true red. The best known ones are; C. 'Gravetye Beauty', C. 'Westerplatte', C. 'Stasik', C. 'John Howells', C. 'Fireflame', etc. If we consult the RHS Colour charts the we find several red colours but the most red is 44A. During one of our Clematis Festivals I saw this plant for the first time and I was very excited about the shape, color and amount of flowers on the young plants.

Clematis 'Perida' is a German hybrid raised by Willem Straver in Emmerich. He registered the plant in 2005 and made this hybrid by using several parents until he got this special red color.

This compact plant is usually not more than 1-2 metres tall, which is small/compact for this kind of Clematis. The flowers are 8-12 cm across and red-purple colour. The 6 tepals are broadly elliptic, overlapping and the size is 6 x 3 cms. The filaments are white tinged with red and the anthers red-purple. The leaves are dark green.

Flowers appear June through August on current year's growth. During the flowering period the plant has a lot of flowers. It grows well in a shady position and under these conditions, it produces the best colours.

The plant can be pruned very hard in the beginning of the year and this keeps the plant in good condition and very garden worthy, with the green leaves that grow each season.

You can place the plant against a wall, trellis or fence but the size of this clematis is such that you should use it on small walls, trellis or fences. Combinations with small shrubs and small roses are worth trying. Combinations with white roses and other garden plants can be a good combination because this clematis is not a heavy grower. Being healthy and rich flowering, C. 'Perida' is a very useful plant in any garden.

    This cultivar is hardy in zones 5, 6, 7, 8 and 9.

Ideally you should first plant it in a free place so that it can grow and establish itself without having to compete with other plants. Use good soil and during spring and summer enough water and nutrition. Humus during the year keeps the soil in better condition for clematis.

One of the prettiest red flowered cultivars. Apart from the outstanding looks its assets are modest demands and easy maintenance. Ideal for container cultivation. Medium-sized flowers, 8–12 cm across, with 6  pointed, glowing crimson sepals and red stamens. Blooms between June and August. Leaves simple or trifoliate, dark green.

A climber supporting itself with leaf tendrils. Reaches 1.5-2 m height.

An undemanding cultivar. Blooms best in light, but not sun-exposed sites. Frost hardy (zone 4–9).
