Hosta ‘Yellow Spot’

 

For centuries Hosta species have been popular garden plants in the temperate climates of the Northern hemisphere.

Their popularity has lead to hundreds of named hybrids having been developed from the 50-odd species found growing naturally in China, Japan, Korea and parts of eastern Russia. Recently hostas have been cultivated and grown locally with a fair measure of success; one hybrid in particular, Hosta ‘Yellow Spot’, has adapted well to our South African growing conditions and therefore features in this month’s plant profile.

Hosta ‘Yellow Spot’ is a low growing, herbaceous perennial plant prized for its lovely green and gold variegated leaves. It forms ever increasing clumps of lush variegated leaves that are ideal for lending colour to shaded parts of gardens in the cool temperate parts of our country.
