Evergreen shrubs or rounded trees, 3-15 m, up to 20 cm in diameter near base, usually unbranched near the ground, glabrous all along; dark gray crust, deeply fissured; young stems reddish. Leaves 4-14.5 × 2-5.4 cm, frequently clustered towards the tips of the branches, narrowly elliptical to oblanceolate, thick, leathery, the upper side bright green, the underside pale green, brownish when dry, the lateral veins 6-11 per side, unmarked, glabrous, the base narrow to broadly cuneate, the apex acute or mucronate, with a group of dark round cells; petioles 0.7-2.5 cm; absent stipules. Floral tube 2.5-4.5 × 0.5-0.6 cm, glabrous inside; sepals 2-3.8 × 0.3-0.5 cm, broadly linear with triangular obtuse tips, without appendages; petals 1.5-3.5 × 0.4-1.4 cm, very narrowly elliptical, apex rounded; ovaries 0.7-1.1 cm; style 4.5-6.3 cm, exerto 2-3 cm further back from the tube mouth; Stigma 3-8 × 1-3 mm, narrowly obovoid. Capsules 1.6-3.8 × 0.6-0.9 cm, on pedicels 0.6-2.2 cm, valves 4-7 mm wide; seeds 2-2.5 × 1-1.5 mm, wings 6-9 × 2-3 mm. Flowering time: November to May (July). 2 n = 20. High evergreen forests.
