 Shrub, small tree or woody herb 1-7.5 m high; stems branching from low down, at first crispate-tomentose with brownish hairs; bark smooth, grey. Leaves petiolate or especially the upper sessile, elliptic or narrowly obovate to ovate, 10-45 cm long, 3-23 cm wide, attenuate towards the rounded, truncate or cordate base, margins serrate, apex acute or shortly acuminate, dull green and thinly finely pubesent mainly on veins and ± glabrescent above, whitish with often ± floccose tomentum beneath; petiole up to 7.5 cm long, auriculate or less often exauriculate at the base. Capitula numerous in very copious terminal compound thyrsoid cymes, the whole inflorescence to 150 cm in diameter; involucre very narrowly cylindrical, 4-6 mm long; phyllaries 6-7-seriate, appressed, green, especially the inner often tinged purplish in the upper part, (broadly) ovate or elliptic, obtuse to rounded, minutely apiculate, the inner elliptic, usually acute, 4-6 mm long, eventually the innermost caducous. Florets 1 per capitulum; corolla scented, mauve, lilac or purplish, fading to white with maturity, 6.3-9 mm long, lobes 2-3 mm long, glabrous but for the throat. Achenes 3.2-4 mm long, strongly 8-10-ribbed, shortly ascending-pubescent to almost glabrescent except at the apex; outer pappus of narrow scales 0.3-1.5 mm long, inner pappus white, 5-8 mm long.
