Description
It is a grass that reaches a size of 1 m in height, the stems are almost woody and hairy. The leaves are divided and up to 40 cm long. Its flowers are white and are grouped in heads.
Distribution and habitat
Originally from Mexico, it lives in a semi-dry climate between 1950 and 2050 meters. Wild plant, associated with xeric scrub and pine forest.
Properties
In Sonora it is used in rheumatic conditions and diabetes, for this it is drunk on an empty stomach the cooking of the rhizome, previously rested, without sweetening, this is how it is prepared in the Federal District, where it is also prescribed for liver pain.
The roots are also considered by the Tarahumara very effective to cure rheumatism, for this purpose they are boiled for several hours, and the resulting liquid already strained is taken at the rate of a glass every morning, for 3 or 4 days.
The Tarahumara use it crushed and boiled for 15 minutes, as an internal remedy against colds. While as a purgative, they grind it in the metate and drink it with plenty of hot water. They claim that it is a very drastic purgative and that its action should be interrupted by eating cold atole.
Other conditions in which its medicinal uses are applied are for angina, neuralgia and ulcers.
With the crushed roots, poultices are applied to the wounds.
History
In the twentieth century, the National Medical Institute points to it as antineuralgic and antirheumatic. Alfonso Herrera Fernández mentions that this plant is used to relieve rheumatic pains of the joints, especially the gouty, the neuralgic ones, are calmed by the application "loco dolenti" of the tincture. He adds, "the rapid healing of ulcers and wounds is favored by washing them with a mixture of the tincture and water or with the tincture alone, used as a topical." Subsequently, Maximino Martínez reports its use as antidiabetic, antidysenteric, antineuralgic, antipodagrico, antirheumatic, astringent, cathartic, cafalalgias, liver congestion and vulnerary. Luis Cabrera de Córdoba cites it in turn as antidiabetic, antidiarrheal, antineuralgic, antirheumatic, cathartic and vagotonism. Finally, the Pharmaceutical Society of Mexico describes it as: antineuralgic, antiseptic and astringent.
Chemistry
This plant contains an alkaloid, essential oil, resin, tannins and glycosides.
